Saab J35Oe Mk.2 Draken 08
Austrian Air Force
The Swedish-built Draken (Dragon) has the distinction of being the first European-designed supersonic fighter.
It has a distinctive double-delta wing and is capable of Mach 2. The Draken first flew in 1955, and remained in
production until 1976.
This colourful example is operated by the Austrian Air Force. Unfortunately it was unable to take part in the
flying display. It is pictured here taxiing to a halt after being forced to abort its takeoff due to engine
failure. With the Dakota, the Gnat and the German AF Panavia Tornado also experiencing technical problems, Leuchars 2003
was a busy weekend for the ground crews.
