Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX PS915
Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight
The PR.XIX was one of the later versions of the Spitfire. It was a photo-reconnaissance version of the Mk.XIV, which
was one of the fastest piston-engined fighters during the latter stages of WW2. With a top speed of 448mph, the Mk.XIV
was very effective at intercepting V-1 flying bombs.
The PR.XIX's performance was due to its mighty Rolls-Royce Griffon 65 engine. It produced a massive 2050 hp- compare
this with the more modest 1030 hp of the Rolls-Royce Merlin II engine in the earlier Mk.I Spitfire.
The price paid for this increase in power was in size and weight. The fuselage required considerable strengthening to
accommodate the Griffon engine. Although this aircraft is still recognizable as a Spitfire, note the longer front
fuselage, elongated prop spinner and the massive five-blade propeller.
