Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress G-BEDF "Sally B"

B17 Preservation Ltd

Sally "B" is an example of the "G" version of the Flying Fortress. This was the final definitive version, of which 8680 were built. More "G" versions were produced than all of the earlier versions combined.

The Fortress was continually modified and improved throughout its service life. Earlier versions did not have the distinctive large tailfin, which was added to improve high-altitude bombing accuracy. Powered dorsal, ventral and tail gun turrets were added to increase defensive firepower. Other significant improvements included turbocharged engines, strengthened undercarriage, self-sealing fuel tanks and extra armour.

Earlier versions of the Fortress had proved vulnerable to head-on attacks by Luftwaffe fighters, so the B-17G now included a forward-firing gun turret under the nose of the aircraft.
